Culture
MoorWings are traditional in that they are ruled by a Queen, though the Queen will be aided and advised by her Sept. Any female MoorWing has a chance at the throne, they are not limited by royal blood.
-
Septs: Upon reaching the age of 5, MoorWing dragonets are given a trial, a series of tests to determine their rank. The ranks are as follows:
-
Ambassador - Often leaders of the Sept, they aid primarily in communication between other Septs or Tribes and represent their Sept at the Sept Summit hosted by the Queen. They are also often the mediators of any conflict within their Sept. Masters of negotiation and natural leaders.
Hunter - Responsible for feeding their Sept. They not only hunt opportunistically but are tasked with tracking and predicting the travel patterns of their prey, many of which live in herds. Active, patient, and quick-thinkers with sharp eyes and a natural sense of responsibility.
Architect - While their main job is to design warrens for their Sept and for the rest of the kingdom, they are often crafters as well, making jewelry, armor, and various goods; the creative visionaries and artists of the Sept.
Tunneler - Tasked with creating the tunnels designed by the architect. They keep their warrens clean, keep things properly stored and organized, and often aid in making schedules and tasks for the others. Hard workers with strong builds.
Warrior - The best fighter in the group, they aid in battle plans and serve on the frontlines of any battle. They are charged with protecting their Sept at all costs. Inquisitive, courageous, and loyal, a guarding force over their Septmates.
Voyager - Dragons whose job it is to explore what lies beyond the home of their Sept and even beyond the kingdom of the MoorWings. They travel across the continent, even over the seas, mapping and reporting back with their finds. Free-spirited and curious by nature, they are the adventurers of the Sept.*
-
Upon receival of their rank, the MoorWing dragonets are placed by Overseers into Septs, groups made up of six dragons, one of each rank. They spend the rest of their lives with their Sept and function as a familial group.
The Queen hosts a bi-annual Sept Summit, where all the Septs come together and not only discuss and report for the betterment of the kingdom, but engage in a great festival and feast.
-
It is not unheard of but considered somewhat taboo for dragons to mate outside of their rank. Keeping dragons with the same rank paired produces strong future candidates for the same rank, so many families will have a long legacy of one rank.
-
Overseers: Dragonets are raised communally by Overseers. Overseers are a special rank of MoorWings who not only raise dragonets, but help evaluate and mentor them in their respective ranks. While parents still have a major role in the early lives of their dragonets, the Overseer system prevents any conflict of interest when it comes to serving one’s Sept.
-
Work Outside the Sept: Although duty to one’s Sept comes first, MoorWings can and do often have occupations outside of their sept roles. MoorWing culture places great value on hobbies and skills, believing that they may tell something about that dragon’s past life.
-
Folklore: MoorWing culture is rich with legends and folklore, mystical stories that teach dragons important values and morals and legends that spin fantastical tales of the history of MoorWings, their land, and the other creatures who inhabit it. (MoorWing book of folklore TBA)
-
Challenging a Queen: Challenges for the throne are traditional ritual combat. A fight to the death between the current queen and the challenger, UNLESS the other 5 members of the Queen’s Sept unanimously agree to surrender the throne to spare her life. In that case, the Queen and her Sept are forced to step down.
-
Death: MoorWings believe in a form of reincarnation. When they die, dragons become some part of the world that they were closest to (i.e. the sky, the earth, the river, the sea, etc.). Following a dragon’s death, their Sept sleep out in the open for five nights.

Territory
General Territory: Open plains
Plains to the Far East most resemble the African Savanna.
The Dragon Teeth Mountains to the West border, where the plains become greener and further resemble European moorland.
Scavengers are extremely rare in the MoorWing Kingdom.
-
Queen Hawkbit’s Palace: The palace mimics the mountains which lay to the west of it, carved from stone in elegant shapes that catch and shape the wind. The structure is further complimented by windswept trees. Much of the palace, however, is hidden to those outside of it, for inside, the palace extends into an elaborate underground tunnel system. The entire structure's interior is decorated with stones and gems, including turquoise and obsidian, which form elaborate murals and designs.
-
Unity: Unity is a large town half in the Moorland kingdom and half in the Woodland kingdom. The town is bustling with dragons from both tribes that live peacefully on the edge of an evergreen forest. There’s a small palace that borders the moors and the forest where the Queens will occasionally meet. Otherwise the palace is used as a museum and public center.
-
Dragon’s Teeth Mountains: This mountain range is the largest in the continent. The tall mountains are very rocky while the lower ones tend to have some trees and grass. Many Moorwings live in these mountains where large cave systems can be found.
-
Clawed Canyon: The Clawed Canyon is a canyon in the north east. A river runs through it and it’s a popular place to mine and look for valuable metals. It is a beautiful location and MoorWings will often take scenic flights or use the the canyon as a means to show off their flight agility.
-
The Great Entrance: The Great Entrance is a large sinkhole. Inside this sinkhole is a huge lake and entrances to many caves. Interesting plant life and crystals have formed in these caves and sometimes dragons spot strange and dangerous creatures.
